For the longest time, I envied girls who had the confidence to wear flower crowns without a care in the world. And while I thought these women looked beautiful and ethereal, I just never had the confidence to pull it off. But then I started to think, you know what Allie…life’s short…who cares what people think. If you want to wear flowers in your hair, go on and put flowers in your hair! So you know what, I decided to do just that and spent my Sunday afternoon putting together a boho flower crown DIY so that you could go on and embrace your inner flower child right along with me.
What I really loved about this project was how much freedom I had with it. If I messed up or didn’t like where it was going I could easily take it apart and start over. So don’t be afraid to experiment with this one. Just have fun with it and you may be surprised with what you end up creating!
What you’re going to need…
- Floral tape
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters
- Measuring tape
- Mirror (optional)
- Assortment of flowers in varying sizes (for my crown I ended up purchasing 4 different style flowers/leaves; my rule is it’s always better to overestimate how much you’ll need because you can always return what you don’t use)
Note: Be aware of the size flowers you buy. If you want a more delicate look, opt for smaller buds. If you want to full on embrace your inner flower child go with the larger flowers. Just keep in mind what looks small on the stem in the craft store may look larger once you’re wearing your crown. I was actually pretty surprised with how large my crown ended up because I had originally put back larger buds opting for a more delicate look and I still ended up with a larger floral crown than I had envisioned.
Lucky for me, I LOVED how it all turned out. I’m just sharing this as food for thought when you’re shopping.
Alright, onto the crafting…
To get started you’re going to want to measure the size of your head so you have the right fit for your crown. Then take your measurement and cut two pieces of floral wire to the same length. Loosely wrap your floral wire together twisting the ends together to make the circle which will be the base of your crown.
Now choose a flower that you want to be one of the highlights of your crown and clip it so you have just that flower and an inch or two of the stem. Line the stem against the wire and wrap it securely with your floral tape. Then repeat this step with your next flower. Continue this pattern till you have covered the majority of your wire.
I opted not to completely cover my wire with flowers because I preferred having a portion exposed for how I wanted the crown to rest on my head. But you do you. You can have as many or as little flowers as you want on your crown using this method.
I found it really helpful to do this project in front of a mirror. It allowed me to periodically check how the flowers would look when I actually wore the crown. It’s not mandatory to have a mirror, but it definitely helped!
Once you have all of the flowers you want on your wire, go ahead and wrap any remaining exposed wire with floral tape.
And that’s it! Pretty simple right?! My daughter was such a fan of my crown that I ended up taking the leftover flowers I had and making her a mini crown for her to match. Sadly the crowns aren’t toddler proof, but we got one or two really cute pictures before it was too destroyed. 😉
